Job Description

AECOM’ s Environmental Planning and Permitting Team is seeking a full-time Entry-Level Environmental Scientist for immediate employment in our Coral Gables or Fort Lauderdale, Florida office.

This position is expected to begin in May 2024.

This position will support numerous natural resource projects in the South Florida region with a focus on environmental permitting and stormwater system inspections. Primary duties include preparation of biological impact assessments, maintenance inspections of drainage facilities, and development of permit applications for a variety of projects for local transportation agencies and other federal, state, and local clients. The candidate will be required to manage multiple tasks, analyze engineering design plans, review and apply for federal, state, and local regulatory permits, prepare technical reports, and assist with surveys and assessments to address potential impacts on natural resources, including protected plants and wildlife and wetland resources.

The appropriately qualified candidate will be a dynamic individual, capable of conducting field surveys, delivering high-quality technical reports, and supporting environmental permitting, compliance, and other technical environmental studies and assessments.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Use strong written and verbal communication skills to serve as a client-facing liaison.

  • Gathering, organizing, and analyzing data and documents to be used in the preparation of technical reports.

  • Conducting environmental impact assessments and field surveys for rare, threatened, or endangered species and their habitats.

  • Conducting habitat assessments and vegetation classifications, including wetland delineations.

  • Preparing high-quality technical reports for natural community evaluations, environmental permitting, botanical surveys, wildlife assessments, environmental impact, biological assessments, mitigation planning, and monitoring.

  • May require working long days outdoors, over uneven, densely vegetated terrain, sometimes under rigorous conditions (e.g., hot and/or rainy weather in remote areas of a variety of habitats).

  • Identify potential environmental impacts through reviews of engineering plans, aerials, and GIS databases.

  • Identify and conduct reviews of historical documents, including permits, easements, and agreements.

  • Conduct visual inspections of drainage facilities.

  • Utilize electronic data collection methods and manage data.

  • Work under the supervision of a project manager or senior-level team member or independently.

  • Ensure assigned tasks stay on schedule and are completed within the allocated budget.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree or higher in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Botany, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with field data collection, data review, and preparation of technical documents.

  • Working knowledge of applicable federal and state environmental laws and regulations (Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, etc.) as they relate to biological resource impacts and environmental permitting.

  • Self-motivated individual with strong attention to detail, good time-use skills, and ability to work in a team environment.

  • Excellent analytical, judgment, and problem-solving capabilities.

  • Ability to handle the demands of multiple priorities for various clients and projects.

  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills; extremely proficient in technical writing; highly effective organization and multi-tasking skills.

  • Must be a self-starter and motivated to produce high-quality results.

  • Must be proficient with MS Office applications.

  • Willingness and availability to travel occasionally (within Florida).

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License preferred to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices when public transportation is not available.

  • The selected candidate must be available to work in Coral Gables or Fort Lauderdale, FL on a scheduled basis.

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $38,000.00 - $50,000.00.
