Job Summary

Paint or remove paint from contract units in accordance with customer specifications. Understands and applies various corrosion control methods and technologies. Position reports to Supervisor.

Essential Responsibilities:

  1. Coats surfaces of motor vehicles with paint, lacquer, epoxy, resin or other material, using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other devices.

  2. Removes old paint from vehicle, using liquid paint remover and scraper.

  3. Smooth surface with sandpaper and steel wool.

  4. Roughens aluminum surfaces with acid solution and steel wool to ensure that paint adheres to surface, masks and covers portions of surfaces not to be painted, paints vehicle or specified portion of vehicle and may paint insignia, letters or numerals on vehicle surface using stencils

  5. Uses a pretreatment wash to prepare aluminum and other types of metal.

  6. Performs all work in accordance to the applicable Technical Manual for the vehicle and work assigned.

  7. May recommend revision to internal maintenance procedures to improve efficiency and ensure quality workmanship within Army regulations.

  8. Must be able recognize and know proper usage of a variety of tools.

  9. Performs all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or fee; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job includes close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and extreme heat. The employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, or may include unsafe conditions, questioning nonstandard operations or environmental factors that may involve unmitigated hazards, and providing feedback to supervisors and managers on all safety issues. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance. Position may require travel.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Legal Resident.

  • Must speak, read, and write English.

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Three or more years’ experience and specific knowledge in vehicle painting either through schooling, to include a formal apprenticeship or equivalent, and/or verifiable on the job experience.

  • PFT and Respirator Fit test may be required.

  • Must have normal color vision.

  • Must know theory and principles of vehicle paint application.

  • Must have or be able to obtain site forklift and other licenses/certifications as needed to perform duties.

  • Must have a valid and current state driver’s license.

  • Must be able to operate a government general-purpose vehicle.

  • Must be able to paint a diverse range of vehicles.

  • Must be able to complete paperwork associated with vehicle repairs.

  • Must be able to manipulate and use hand tools and hydraulic equipment.

  • Must possess basic computer skills.

  • Must have the ability to read, interpret, and apply Technical Manual instructions, publications, and safety rules.

  • Must be able to read, interpret and use vehicle maintenance manuals, service bulletins, wiring/schematic diagrams, data tables and other specifications to determine feasibility and method to repair or replace malfunctioning or damaged components.

  • Must have the ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.

  • Position may require travel.

  • Ability to work in a team environment
