Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a HSE Specialist 1 to be based at our Hill Air Force Base, Utah site.

Purpose and Scope:

Performs duties of safety, environmental specialist and radioactive protection officer for depot operations. Performs safety and environmental inspections and is HAZMAT incident point of contact for host Environmental Office. Inspects HAZMAT spills and ensures compliance with spill response and containment team in the neutralization of spills. Ensures receipt, stow, issue and shipping processes and inventory control for HAZMAT and radioactive material are safe and meet all EPA, Federal, State, Host, and DLA requirements. Ensures close cooperation of depot with Host and DDC, RPO/Environmental/Safety Offices. Work with little supervision. Reports directly and daily to Program Manager, or immediately in event of safety, environmental or radioactive material concern.

Essential Responsibilities:

Identifies, examines, classifies, inspects and reports on specific and general issues of safety, environmental, HAZMAT and radiation. Examinations may be visual or require measuring devices and techniques.

  1. Serves as Radioactive Protection Officer (RPO)

  2. Able to use basic processes of inspection/examination procedures for material.

  3. Able to read specifications, drawings, prints, schematics and photographs.

  4. Able to successfully certify in Safety, HAZMAT, and Radioactive training requirements. Must be current in all certifications at all times.

  5. Perform PPP&M pertaining to Radioactive material as required.

  6. Prepare labels as required.

  7. Prepare reports as required.

  8. Operate tools and equipment in performance of duties.

  9. Receive data from and input data to DSS and other automated systems in performance of duties

  10. Operate MHE (forklifts, warehouse equipment) as assigned and hold appropriate license

  11. Count, weigh, record data, apply tags and labels.

  12. Train employee on required safety training.

Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Work Environment, Physical Demands and Mental Demands:

Shop environment with hazardous equipment, moving MHE, obstacles and high volume activity. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds for short distances, stoop, bend, kneel, walk, have full dexterity and corrective vision. Outside work in hot and cold or wet weather is often required. Work environment often has fumes or airborne particles. Noise level is loud. Protective devices are required to avoid injury.

Minimum Requirements

Minimum requirements:

  • Minimum two years general experience. Minimum two year specific experience in areas of Safety, HAZMAT and Radioactive material handling and inspection, QA, or related processes. High school diploma or GED required. Must have demonstrated ability to obtain certification required for position. Must be able to use DSS and other automated distribution systems used at site. Must be able to follow requirements of MI STD 129. Must be able to follow SOP's.

  • Good written communication skills

  • Working knowledge of word-processing and integrated software applications.

  • Organizational skills and ability to perform detail-oriented work are required.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

General safety experience, QA or related processes. Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) certification. HAZMAT and Radioactive material handling and inspection.
