Job Description

AECOM’s Southern California Environmental Planning and Permitting (EPP) Practice is seeking a Senior Architectural Historian with expertise in historic research, field inventories, site assessments, and document preparation pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 and Section 110, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) compliance.

The successful candidate will become a part of a dynamic team working in across California and the broader West Coast region on projects for a wide range of local, regional, and state agencies, as well as private and non-profit clients. The candidate will also collaborate with a nation-wide team of experts and would be expected to contribute to projects outside the California region. Primary responsibilities would include assessment of adverse effects and significant impacts to historic properties, consultation support and preparation of agreement documents for NHPA Section 106, and preparation and review of reports for cultural resource and environmental compliance.

The successful candidate is also expected to provide technical leadership and mentorship to staff and may also lead external workshops on technical innovations and legal/regulatory changes related to architectural history, publish work relevant to practitioners, and engage in other internal and external activities that would help to grow the regional cultural resources practice.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct field inventories, historical research, and historic resource analysis pursuant to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Section 106 and Section 110 and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), as well as the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

  • Prepare draft and final agreement documents for Section 106 compliance and support consultation efforts and development of mitigation measures.

  • Evaluate of significance and eligibility of historic properties for listing in local registers and the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

  • Assess of effects and significant impacts to historic properties and develop mitigation measures.

  • Document historic properties in accordance with Historic American Building Survey/Historic American Engineer Record/Historic American Landscapes Survey (HABS/HAER/HALS) standards and guidelines.

  • Prepare written documents, including historic contexts, resource analysis, historic property inventory forms, and technical reports.

  • Acting as a liaison between community groups, government agencies, developers and elected officials in developing neighborhood plans.

  • Conducting extensive research in specific or general project areas.

  • Lead business development efforts and act as proposals lead to grow the workstream for the practice.

  • Write and present formal and technical reports, working papers and correspondence.

  • Facilitate broad dialogue and may provide guidance across functions, geographies and business lines, and with external stakeholders and clients.

  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and training to staff on areas of expertise.

  • Actively participate in professional or industry organizations as a committee member.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA/BS Degree

  • 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License is required.

  • Ability/willingness to travel and perform field work as needed. Candidate must have physical ability to work in field locations and perform research at repositories (consistent with public health requirements).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in relevant field with Graduate level coursework in History, English, Historic Preservation, Anthropology, Archaeology, Public History, Architectural History, American Studies, or other closely aligned academic discipline.

  • 15 years of experience as an Architectural Historian.

  • Meets the Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards for Historian or Architectural Historian

  • Working knowledge of architectural drawings and conventions

Additional Information

  • Due to the nature of the work, US Citizenship is required.

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $120,000.00 - $148,000.00.
