Job Description

AECOM is seeking a Senior Design Engineer for a project with a large utility client in California focused on undergrounding of overhead powerlines.

This role will be responsible to conduct quality reviews on engineering and design of individual powerline sections and leverage Bluebeam application to mark drawings and plans for designers to correct mistakes or improve design deliverables in various disciplines such as civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical. The reviews must be conducted to make sure engineering and design process meet requirements of the client’s standards and procedures, California’s policies such as General Order (GO) # 95, as well as industry standards related to civil engineering, electrical engineering, and safety.

The program is adhering to aggressive timelines, supporting achieving undergrounding mileage targets, managing teams, and tracking interdisciplinary coordination to support overall delivery.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Strong working knowledge of utilities’ transmission and distribution (T&D) in California

  • Strong working knowledge of design of T&D systems, related standards and best practices

  • Strong working knowledge of the concepts of quality control and quality assurance

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, creating problem-solving, collaboration and leadership skills

  • Experience working with a multi-disciplinary and diverse team of professionals

  • Experience in engineering large, complex projects in multiple locations

  • Ability to apply acquired expertise and knowledge to solve business challenges

  • Experience successfully coaching peers and team members

Duties of the position include:

  • Conduct design of overhead distribution lines, in order to install, remove, or enhance the distribution poles and overhead circuits for regular and complex conditions.

  • Communicate all aspects of designs and calculations to the client, other design teams, and Program Management Office (PMO) team.

  • Use appropriate software to create models and conduct all civil, mechanical, and electrical calculations and create drawings.

  • Conduct detailed quality control review of undergrounding designs and civil/mechanical/electrical calculations conducted by other designers and engineers, create clear list of errors, communicate errors and issues with designers, and follow up until comments incorporated and issues resolved.

  • Technically leads engineering, and client satisfaction areas using consistent processes and tools.

  • May include management of small teams across business lines, in remote locations and/or management of subcontractors.

  • Manage projects on a local to regional basis achieving quality outcomes, financial performance, and client satisfaction.

  • Successfully develops technical strategy and execution plan to conduct duties.

  • Experience working and collaborating with a multi-disciplinary project team.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • BS in Civil Engineering or Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent degree from accredited college or university.

  • Expertise in AutoCAD and Bluebeam software , with at least 6 years of experience in design of distribution circuits and creating drawings.

  • 6+ years of relevant experience, including both engineering and management aspects of projects related to distribution and/or transmission circuits.

  • Experience with overhead and underground electric supply and communications lines and applications such as ANSI Standards and NESC rules.

  • State of California registered Professional Engineer (P.E.)

  • As a condition of employment, candidates must pass a drug screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience

  • Demonstrated experience delivering complex projects and/or programs with high quality on schedule and within scope and budget.

  • Project and client management experience including management of multiple projects of significant scope and complexity

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification

  • Experience with regional and national utilities, independent system operators (ISOs) and regulatory agencies.

  • Working knowledge of GO95 and GO128 standards.

  • Working knowledge of Federal, State and local laws, codes, ordinances, regulations and policies pertaining to power infrastructure operation and DOT (Caltrans) standards is desirable.

  • Able to participate in field walks and create field sketches, take dimensions, etc. as necessary.

Offered compensation will be based on location and individual qualifications. The expected range is $92,870.00 - $150,000.00.
